Is it just me, or did March sneak up out of nowhere? One minute, grumbling about the cold, trying to keep warm, and raising the layered look to a whole new level. Now it is starting to feel a little like spring, “Hey, the days are getting longer, I can actually feel the sun, and honestly, it’s about time!"
For those of us in medical, the seasons don’t so much change as they just swap out one batch of ailments for another. Goodbye, frostbite and dry skin; hello, allergies and questionable rashes. But even on the longest shifts, something about spring just feels like, you know … lighter. And then, of course, there is daylight saving time, which is a body adjustment. Needless to say, the undeniable fact is that summer is creeping closer. Whatever it is, I say ...let’s roll with it.
March has so many celebrations to remind us, Spring is around the corner. Just a few; Fat Tuesday, National Puppy Day, St. Patrick’s Day? A perfectly good reason to rock green scrubs and hope that the breakroom has something better than what they usually offer …..not going to say more. …International Women's Week with the stash of chocolate that also appear at the nurses’ station (because somehow, it always does). And someone, somewhere, brings in a tray of spring-themed cupcakes. We don’t ask questions, we just eat them. Oh, and with Nurses Week and Mother’s Day coming up, we’ll be soaking in whatever appreciation—and snacks—come our way.
For the joy of the coming new season, your celebration may be, stealing five minutes of sunshine in the parking lot before heading back inside. Nice! Our celebrations may look a little different, but they still count.
So, what’s your spring game plan? Are you planning a weekend getaway? Swapping out winter coats for scrubs without the tees underneath? Yep! Even if it’s something as small as grabbing an iced coffee instead of a hot one, a lovely new season is upon us.
Here’s to Spring, the promise of summer, and every tiny moment of joy we can grab along the way. Cheers (with whatever caffeine or hydration source is within reach)!
